REALITY

Reality! formally known as the Sue Willis Workshop is an experience led education initiative that illustrates the realities of teenage pregnancy and parenthood.

This service is delivered in secondary schools and other youth settings in Southampton and its surrounding areas for young people aged 11-25. The group was set up in June 2001 by 4 teenage mothers who wanted to help prevent others from ending up in a similar situation.

The purpose of our organisation is to help support the Governments strategy of reducing the number of teenage pregnancies by half by the year 2010. This aim is met through teenage parents sharing their experiences and knowledge with young people through a structured programme of lessons. We highlight a wide variety of issues including: misuse of contraception, alcohol, housing, money, impact on relationships, physical and emotional implications and much more.

We deliver sessions in all 14 secondary schools in Southampton, 3 colleges, 5 schools outside of Southampton, Young offender projects, excluded young people, youth clubs, care homes and various other projects in the area.

The key element of Reality! is that our lessons are delivered by teenage parents who understand the true implications of what it is like to have a baby at a young age. This helps to build a relationship of trust and understanding to develop with the young people that we work with. Enabling and encouraging young parents to volunteer is therefore fundamental to the project and we currently have 3 volunteers that are working with us.
