Training programme

Young people accessing Youth Options are offered
the opportunity to participate in a range of training courses, many of
which are accredited. Young people from the age of 11 are encouraged to
access the training programme, which includes the following:
Animation Studio - using computer programmes to create animated films.
Basic Food Hygiene - one-day course that teaches the importance and relevance of food hygiene.
Fire Safety Awareness - run in partnership with Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service, young people participate in an inter-active session with the fire personnel at Hightown Fire Station in Thornhill where they learn about the work of a fire officer, fire hazards, fire safety and experience first-hand how to deal with an actual fire First Aid - accredited course delivered over a period of 6 weeks, covering all basic elements of emergency First-Aid.
Roadrunners - developed by Clubs for Young People and Crime Concern, the programme is aimed at young people approaching the legal driving age, and provides them with an insight to the responsibilities of owning and driving a car. The programme is delivered over five themed sessions.
Sports Coaching - young people can achieve Level 1 and Level 2 in a range of sports, including football, basketball and netball. There is also an opportunity to participate in the Junior Sports Leader's Award (JSLA)
Water Sports courses - these courses have been run in partnership with Southampton Solent University and Southampton Water Sports Centre. Young people can gain accreditation in Kayaking, Sailing and Power Boating at Level 1 and Level 2. There is also an opportunity for them to progress onto Level 3 and Instructor Level.
